A FINELY INLAID GILT-BRONZE HEAD A BODHISATTVA, 16TH-17TH CENTURY
Nepal. Sturdily cast as the head of a Bodhisattva, the face with a calm expression and almond-shaped eyes below arched eyebrows, centered by an urna inlaid with tourmaline, the hair in tight curls, the left ear with an elaborate earring inlaid with four rubies and a central tourmaline, a foliate collar around the neck.
Provenance: German trade.
Condition: Good condition with extensive old wear and some casting flaws, minor nicks, dents and losses, two cracks to the extension at the back.

Expert's note: The inlays of ruby and tourmaline, which were rare and expensive during the period, indicate that this head must have been part of an important figure. The extension at the back of the head further indicates that this figure was part of an overall larger temple relief.
