A CARAMEL GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, YANGZHOU SCHOOL, 1820-1850
Published: Robert Hall, Chinese Snuff Bottles VI: from the collection of Lionel Copley, Part II, London, April 1994, no. 80
Opinion: This rather unique glass snuff bottle seems to be inspired by a group of Imperial chalcedony or agate bottles produced at the Court in a range of caramel, honey-beige, and gray material. As the pair of ducks is a standard Imperial motif from the 18th century and appears on the group of chalcedony bottles, it can only have been inspired by the hardstone equivalents, and as such is extremely rare.
China. Of slender ovoid form rising from an oval foot to a straight neck, the glass finely carved in low relief with two ducks swimming in a lotus pond to one side, the reverse with a goat and her young under a pine, the narrow sides decorated with two mask beast handles suspending mock ring handles.
Provenance: The Mei Ling Collection. Lionel Copley, acquired from the above. Robert Hall, London, April 1994. A noted Swiss private collection, acquired from the above, for GBP 2,600 or EUR 4,600 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Lionel Copley was an English physician from Pontefract, Yorkshire, who was a passionate collector of Chinese snuff bottles. He started his collection with a snap decision to buy two bottles in 1952. Initially concentrating only on glass bottles, he moved on to acquire examples made of jade, agate, porcelain, crystal, amber, and even more humble and ephemeral materials, such as gourd. Robert Hall is one of the leading dealers of Chinese Snuff Bottles. He has played a vital role in the formation of many of the world's great collections, including the Mary and George Bloch Collection. His wide knowledge of the subject has enabled him to produce numerous publications and articles, such as his series Chinese Snuff Bottles I to XVI (1987-2011).

Robert Hall,《Chinese Snuff Bottles VI:from the collection of Lionel Copley》,第二部分,倫敦,1994年4月,編號80。
