A gold dress pin with tapering round-section shank, hollow-formed repoussé sheet gold finial of a crouching gryphon with wings spread, forepaws raised holding a hoop with short chain and amphora pendant. See Marshall, F.H. Catalogue of the Jewellery, Greek, Etruscan and Roman, in the Department of Antiquities, British Museum, London, 1911, item 1999 for type. 14.9 grams, 12.5cm (5"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Fine condition. Rare.
