3rd-2nd millennium BC. A discoid schist(?) stamp seal with pierced knop handle, intaglio profile image of a standing kilted figure of Anu the Creator with wings to the shoulders, hooked frond in each hand, pellets in the field. 10.60 grams, 25mm (1"). From a private Belgian collection; previously part of a private collection formed in Germany in the 1990s. An(u) is the ancient leader of the Sumerian pantheon, later replaced by Enlil as the god of the heavens. Anu belongs to the oldest group of Mesopotamian gods and his major roles are as an authority figure, decision-maker and creator. [No Reserve]Very fine condition.
