Dated 1814 AD. A carved rectangular limestone stele with seven lines of Hebrew text above a pair of amphorae(?) recording its dedication to a lady named Aziza: 'This is the monument of the burial of the honoured woman, modest and beautiful in her deeds, the lady Aziza, entombed and buried on the first day [of the week] twenty-sixth day of the month Kislev, [year] 5574 (=1814"). 33 kg, 45cm including stand (17 3/4"). Property of a central London gallery; acquired in the early 1980s; accompanied by a copy of the translation by Dr M.J. Geller at the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College London dated 23 January 1985. Fine condition.
