A carved limestone stupa with separate rectangular base, the stupa with lotus flower dome and tiered rectangular top, the body with four raised circumferential bands, one with rosettes, one with cross hatching, one plain and one with chevrons; the base with flat top recessed for the stupa, four rectangular columns with scrolled tops to each corner, the panels carved in high-relief depicting the stages of Buddha's life comprising: Buddha seated on the lotus throne, two attendants to each side; a standing Buddha with his right hand raised in a gesture of reassurance, two attendants to each side; Buddha seated, his hands in the Dhyana mudra position, with two attendants to each side; reclining Buddha on a bed with his head resting on a pillow, about to enter the paranirvana, two attendants to each side. 10.6 kg total, 28cm (11"). Property of a North London gentleman; previously in a private collection formed in the 1990s. Fine condition.
