6th-11th century AD. A square-section gold bar or ingot with evidence of compression and fracture to each end, and slight longitudinal twist. Cf. West, S. A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Finds From Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998; Blackburn, M. Viking Coinage and Currency in the British Isles, London, 2011. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) under report number SUR-5FABCA. 16.82 grams, 36mm (1 1/2"). Found near Great Farlingdon, Oxfordshire, UK, on 19th March 2016; disclaimed with treasure reference 2016 T306; accompanied by a copy of the Treasure Case Report and various other documentation from the British Museum and the Senior Coroner for Oxfordshire. The weight of 16.82 grams is approximately equivalent to four early Anglo-Saxon solidi and likewise to two Scandinavian ørtugar in the later Viking Age systems used in the Baltic area. The regular square-section form of the ingot is unusual but not without parallels. Fine condition. A rare English find.
