Description: Elaborately painted, three-legged, lidded bowl. On the outside of the slightly curved lid is a couloir with waterfall and multiple tanchotsuru (red-crowned cranes), symbols of longevity in a forest of bamboo and wisteria with hanging bunches of blue blossoms. In the branches are two pheasants, as well as a sparrow darting by. On the inside of the lid are two holy rakkan. The one with a dragon is Handaka Sonja. In the well of the vessel is a throning daimyo, in front of whom are three ladies, one of whom, possibly the famous courtly poet Ono no Komachi, is reading aloud. Running around the outside is a sansui landscape; on the legs are chrysanthemums. On the bottom is the Satsuma cross and, inside an oval frame, the signature FUKU-BE 服 部 zo 造 (made it). On the upper side of the lid is, far to the right of the cranes, the painter’s signature, presumably KE-ZAN 袈 山. Condition: Very well preserved Provenance: From an Austrian private collection
