Description: Carved in wood and painted in polychrome pigments over gesso. Gilt-metal eyes and prominent beak. Animal hair inset whiskers. Prominent wrinkles, eyebrows and cheekbones. Expressively carved Kyogen mask, likely relating to a Noh play on Tengu. Condition: Cracked and chipped paint, mainly in the protruding parts, gilding to one eye lost, good; old usage patina at the back, on the inside - general age-related wear Provenance: From an important Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930 - with old collection no. ‘AGRON’ A similar mask was sold at Christie’s on 15th October 2014, lot 35.
