A Chinese jade carved cup dating from the Ming dynasty. The cup is carved with a ring and stylized beast for the handle, while the top band of the cup features taotie masks, the middle band depicts 2 beasts chasing a swirling ball, and the bottom band depicts banana leaves and beast heads. There is a 4-character mark carved on the bottom. Dimensions are: 3 1/2 inches tall X 4 1/4 inches wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: It is in good condition with 1 miniscule chip in the top rim. Provenance: From Dr. Kuo in Chicago, by descent from his father-in-law (Shen Zhongtao, 1892-1980), writer of the "Hua Ying Yi Jing" and "Yi Gua and Science," who collected books in China prior to 1949, using the money he earned working in the Commercial Press, Qiming Bookstore in Shanghai.
