Mai Thu était un artiste accompli. Il jouait du doc-huyen, un instrument de musique monocorde typique du Vietnam, qu’il a régulièrement intégré dans ses compositions. Il est alors assez compréhensible de retrouver une grande variété d’œuvres illustrant des musiciennes parmi celles de l’artiste. Ces deux compositions indépendantes l’une de l’autre sont très semblables ; les deux partagent le même fond presque uni et présentent une musicienne assise. La première est vêtue de bleu. Elle joue du dan nhi (appelé dan co dans le sud du Vietnam), un instrument à corde s’apparentant à un violon, puisqu’il se joue avec un arc. La deuxième, quant à elle, est vêtue d’un habit vert tranchant avec l’arrière-plan monochrome de la composition. Elle semble jouer du dan nguyet (lunoline), cithare vietnamienne à deux cordes.

Mai Thu was an accomplished artist who played the doc-huyen, a one-stringed instrument typical of Vietnam, which he frequently included in his compositions. This explains why a wide variety of the artist’s works feature female musicians. These two paintings, though unrelated, are very similar; they both have the same almost plain background and show a seated woman musician. The first, dressed in blue, is playing the dan nhi (known as a dan co in southern Vietnam): a stringed instrument similar to a violin, as it is played with a bow. Meanwhile the second is wearing a green outfit that contrasts with the monochrome background. She seems to be playing a dan nguyet (moon lute), a two-stringed Vietnamese guitar.

Mai Thứ là một nghệ sĩ thành công. Ông chơi độc huyền cầm, một nhạc cụ đơn dây điển hình của Việt Nam mà ông thường xuyên đưa vào các tác phẩm của mình. Do đó, khá dễ hiểu khi tìm thấy nhiều tác phẩm minh họa cho các nhạc sĩ trong số những tác phẩm của ông. Hai sáng tác này, độc lập với nhau nhưng rất giống nhau; cả hai chia sẻ cùng một phông nền gần như thống nhất và mô tả một nữ nhạc sĩ ngồi. Nữ nghệ sĩ đầu tiên mặc quần áo màu xanh. Cô chơi đàn nhị (được gọi là đàn cò ở miền Nam Việt Nam), một nhạc cụ dây tương tự như đàn violin, vì nó được chơi bằng cung.
