Voltigeur racing with Job Marson up in the colours of the Marquess of Zetland inscribed lower centre 'Voltigeur / 1850' oil on canvas 54.5 x 75cm Footnote: Provenance: According to a label on the reverse, Sir Cuthbert [Eley] Quilter, 1st Bt (1841-1911) by whom given to Algernon Dunn Gardner (1853-1929) on 23rd January 1912 Voltigeur won for the Marquess of Zetland in 1850, the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger and the present picture was no doubt painted to record the winning of the Triple Crown, which since the first 2000 Guineas race of 1809, only fifteen horses have achieved, including the great Nijinsky. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. There are minor undulations across the surface but the picture is generally in plane. The paint layer has a wrinkles surface, caused by slight shrinkage of the canvas. There are numerous areas of retouching covering cracks and a few small damages. The varnish is clear and semi-matte with a few fly spots and dust across the surface. The frame has a few losses to the surface and wear to the gilding.
