Dimensions (cm): Length: 4142 Width: 40.5 Height: 88 Chinese Ming Dynasty Period Zitan Carved everted rim Altar Table. The table top is made of a rectangle piece, thick and tall Zitan wood. Four braces back the top beneath. The apron under the "waist" (suoyao, the contracted part of a piece of Chinese furniture) supporting the table top is carved with scrolling ruyi and Wanzi pattern. The four legs are straight legs and bridged by sturdy stretched bars to two sides that conjoined each leg, the whole supported on legs of rectangles square section joined by stepped stretchers on hoofed foot. The table is made of large timber. The generous curve of the horse-hoof feet give the table weight. This Chinese table gives the impression of luxury, strong, magnificent, charming and antique. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The entirety is encased in amazing relief carving which gives this box a captivating appearance. The Zitan round armchairs shows smooth lustrous patina, dense hardwood with feathery fine grain.
