A Chinese Red Cinnabar Lacquer Jar and Cover Of ovoid form, the tall sides rising from a flat base to a wide shoulder, the body carved with an intricate design of scholars and students, one pair crossing a bridge, one scholar holding a sceptre and fly whisk, one student holding a palm leaf fan, all set among towering rocky peaks and pine with dwellings among the mountains, a band of deeply carved lappets at the shoulder, all against a dense diamond-pattern diaper ground, the base with upright palm leaves, the domed cover with deeply carved scrollwork, the base in black lacquer.
