An antique Khmer style pre-Angkor Vishnu torso. The sculpture is in pre-Angkor 7th/8th century style. This muscular image of Vishnu is depicted stood straight legs mounted on a wood base (later). The image is carved in the round with the back as carefully carved as the front. The style of the Vishnu derives from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The dhoti covering the lower half of the body is arranged in the typical Andhran Ikshvaku period fashion, with a thick rolled cloth sash crossing the front of the figure at hip level and a suspended loop dropping down the thighs. The sash is knotted at the hips with the ends falling down at the sides of the body. In his left hand he holds a lotus bud and in his right possibly a symbol of the earth (bhu). The remains of the other two arms can be seen to the side and rear of the statue. The sculpture certainly possesses a muscular grandeur, the torso swells to a heavy and conventional shape evoking the aesthetic of the pre-Angkor period.
