A fine quality antique stone Shiva with yoni. A a symbol of fertility and energy it is an iconic representation of the Hindu deity, Shiva. As the destroyer, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent and unchanging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts. This magnificently crafted stone figure has facial features and ornate jewellery typical of the Bayon style. The cylindrical piling up of his hair into a hair chignon and regimented hair curls demonstrate the ecumenical nature of iconography in the Bayon period, the former associated with the supreme form of Vishnu, the latter with Shiva. To the rear the Sampot is fastened with a butterfly style bow in the post-Angkor Wat style. The piece is formed of two interlocking pieces. Provenance: Ex- private US Collection.
