An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Teaching Buddha, surrounded by acolytes of Buddha in Meditation and Enlightenment pose, in 13th century Majapahit style.

This lovely Buddha is seated on a round double lotus leaf pedestal, itself on a square plinth, in the adamantine posture of vajraparyankasana, the right leg over the left, with the soles of both feet facing upward. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered. He holds his hands in the dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity.Either side of Buddha his acolytes are seated in Dhyana or Meditation pose. This hand gesture promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. In front of Buddha sits his acolyte in Enlightenment or Bhumisparsa pose. Each acolyte is sat on a multi-tiered pedestal. The Buddha is backed by an aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a lotus flower finial. He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.Provenance: Ex- private Singapore collection.
