An antique Khmer Vishnu in the pre-Angkorian Phnom Da style. This majestic yet benign image of Vishnu shows the four armed (chaturbhuja) from of the God, whose hands usually carry a globe, a disk, a conch and a mace as distinguishing attributes. Here only the disk (or chakra) and conch partially remain, supported by the surviving half of an arch (symbolising his divinity). The figure demonstrates the tribhanga posture typical of the Phnom Da style, along with a naturalistic representation of musculature, delicately carved fingers and refined facial features of that style. The sampot, the Cambodian garment in which a length of cloth is wound around the hips and tucked in at the waist, a pre-cursor to the styles that would become increasingly elaborate in Khmer morphology. A majestic and serene museum quality piece. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece. Provenance: Private Singapore Collection Medium: Stone Dimensions: 98cm / 39” General Condition: Good condition. Consistent with age. Please see images.
