TANABE CHIKUUNSAI I (1877–1937) Taisho (1912-1826) or Showa (1926-1989) era, circa 1920-1930 'Twin Moons' fruit basket, timber bamboo, partially peeled on one side, rattan; asanoha hexagonal plaiting; wrapping; knotting; signed on the base Chikuunsai kore o tsukuru (Chikuunsai made this); with a wood tomobako storage box titled and signed Sogetsu kudamonokago Chikuunsai kore o tsukuru (Twin Moons Fruit Basket; Chikuunsai made this). 29.2cm (11½in) high. (2). 注脚 This type of fruit basket seems to have become fashionable in the early Showa era after an example by Sakaguchi Sounsai (1899-1967), a leading pupil of Chikuunsai I, became one of the very first pieces of bamboo art to be accepted for the Teiten national exhibition, in 1929 (now Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
