A wood and ivory okimono of a temple servant Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Standing in waraji (straw sandals) and wearing an eboshi (courtier's hat), looking to his left, smiling, clutching an umbrella in one hand and a lantern in the other, his kimono inlaid with assorted floral roundels in ivory and shell; affixed to a rectangular octagonal wood base lacquered in gold hiramaki-e with foliate motifs; signed on the reverse Miyao tsukuru within a shell-inlaid rectangular reserve. 34.5cm (13½in) high.
