An inlaid iron rectangular rounded fubako (document box) and cover By Asai of Kyoto, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Worked throughout in predominantly flat gold relief with dragon and ho-o bird roundels scattered over a tightly clustered ground of sparse chrysanthemum crests interwoven among fragmented rinzu (textile-weave) patterns, the design extending over to the box with chrysanthemum heads beneath repeated hanabishi (flowery diamond) motifs, the cover applied in gold relief with a simulated elaborately tied brocade tassel; unsigned. 6.4cm x 19.2cm x 8cm (2½in x 7½in x 3 1/8in).
