A Satsuma rectangular teacaddy and cover By Kobaien, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Painted in enamels and gilt, each face with a different scene, one with Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra) reading a scroll seated on a white elephant, another with Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri) on a shishi (Chinese mythical lion), separated by two panels of birds and flowers, one with a peacock perched on a pine tree and the other with a white egret wading in a river, the domed cover decorated with a prancing kirin amidst stylised foliage, a removable en-suite inner lid, signed in gilt on the base with an almost entirely obliterated signature Kobaien with a kao; with a square wood stand. 12.7cm (5in) high.
