A pair of Victorian sterling silver goblets, London 1868/69 by Benjamin Stephens Of rounded form upon spreading circular pedestal bases with beaded rims. The sided engraved with a regimental badge 96. Gilt interiors. Each fully marked to the side. One with stamped numerals underneath 562. One with added strengthening ring under foot. (2) Height – 14.9 cm / 5.9 inches Weight – 675 grams / 21.7 ozt The 96th Regiment of Foot was a British Army regiment, raised in Menorca (then called Minorca) by Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Stuart (1753-1801) from German-speaking prisoners of war of Swiss regiments in Spanish service on 12 December 1798. The regiment deployed to the Cape of Good Hope in 1863 and then travelled on to India in 1865 before returning home in 1875. on 1 July 1881 the Childers Reforms came into effect and the regiment amalgamated with the 63rd (West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot to form the Manchester Regiment. At the time of production these goblets may well have been made for use in India while the colonel was changing over was General The Hon. Sir Augustus Almeric Spencer GCB (1807-1893), third son of Francis Spencer, 1st Baron Churchill (1779-1845), to Lt-Gen. George Thomas Conolly Napier, CBE (1816-73).
