A pair of framed Chinese watercolor and ink on paper paintings of buddhas dating from the 19th century. Both paintings are mounted on a silk backing. One of the buddhas holds a jewel in his left hand and makes a gesture of protection or refuge with his right hand. He is adorned in an elaborate robe with dragon and flower roundels. The other buddha holds a jewel in his lap with both hands in dhyana mudra, and he wears an elaborate robe with dragon roundels. Both buddhas sit in padmasana on double lotus pedestals. Dimensions are: the painting measures 58 inches tall X 31 inches wide, 147.3 cm X 78.7 cm, while the frame measures 68 inches tall X 37 1/2 inches wide, 172.7 cm X 95.3 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: One painting with the buddha making the protection mudra has significant loss, tears, repairs, creasing, and mold damage.
