Description

Tabernacle door; Spanish Renaissance school, 16th century. Polychrome carved wood. It has faults. Measurements: 49,5 x 27 x 5 cm. Door for an altar tabernacle made of carved and polychromed wood, which still has some metal parts, as can be seen in the back of the piece. This piece, which formed part of a larger sculptural ensemble, was probably located in the centre of an altarpiece, as a vanishing point and epicentre of the architectural structure. It was very common to decorate these doors with liturgical elements or scenes referring to the life of Christ. In this case, for example, there is a carved relief showing the passage of Jesus tied to the column. Aesthetically, the figure of Jesus stands out for its monumentality and the dimensions of his body, which are clearly inspired by the Italian Renaissance school. It is interesting to note the play on the carving of the musculature, which is fluid, while the folds of the cloth of purity are angular. Despite the flaws, it is possible to appreciate the artist s interest in capturing details such as the rope holding the hand, the volume he creates with the relief of the column, or the space in perspective he generates by marking the floor. Despite its gilded finish, this space retains traces of polychromy that reveal a semicircular arch behind Christ s head. Christ tied to a column is an episode belonging to the cycle of the Passion. It is a highly dramatic but non-narrative theme, designed to encourage the faithful to be moved by Christ s physical suffering and to admire his acceptance of the misfortunes he must suffer in order to redeem mankind. The scene takes place in the Praetorium in Jerusalem, the centre of Roman power, where Christ has arrived for the second and last time, after passing through various stages. He is exhibited before the crowd ("Ecce Homo"), who preferred to release Barabbas rather than him and, either before or after this exhibition, he is stripped of his clothes and tied to a pillar, where he is subjected to mockery concerning his alleged crime, being "king of the Jews", and torture, including scourging and the crowning with thorns.
