Description

Victor Wolfvoet II, Saint Joseph with the Christ Child Oil on panel. 45.5 x 34.5 cm. The composition of the present work is based on a painting by Gerard Seghers (1591-1651), which until recently was only known through an engraving after it by Jacob Neefs. It was only in 2019 that Anne Delvingt was able to identify a painting in the former abbey church of Saint Jacques in Lunéville (near Nancy) as the original work by Seghers. While the engraving shows the composition as a mirror image of the painting in Lunéville, the present version by Wolfvoet is based on the newly discovered oil painting. However, both the painting by Seghers and the engraving show St. Anthony, rather than St. Joseph, with the infant Jesus. St. Joseph, in turn, is depicted in another, only slightly smaller version by Wolfvoet painted on copper, which was recently auctioned in Vienna (Dorotheum, 15.12.2020, lot 61). It is possible that the present painting is identical with a work that was once held in the collection of Count Hugo Franz Karl von Eltz (1701-1779), Vicar General of the Archbishopric of Mainz and Provost of the Cathedral of Mainz. In the catalogue for the auction of his collection in Mainz in 1785 (Lugt 3884), a painting by Wolfvoet is described under lot 685 as follows: "S. We are grateful to Dr. Bert Schepers for confirming the attribution to Victor Wolfvoet II on the basis of digital photographs and for his kind help with cataloguing the present lot. Victor Wolfvoet II, Der hl. Josef mit dem Jesuskind Öl auf Holz. 45,5 x 34,5.
