Provenance Auctioned by Heberle, Cologne, 28.-29.10.1887 (paintings from the collection of Baron von Münchhausen, Franz Reichardt, J. P. Weyer & others), lot 66. - Auctioned by Ant. Kraus, Paris. - Acquired there in 1977 and subsequently in a German private collection. Literature Ingvar Bergström: Dutch Still Life Painting in the Seventeenth Century, London 1956, p. 99-100, illus. 89. This work shows two Delftware bowls of fruit and strawberries on a tabletop alongside a sprig of currants, a pastry, nuts, cherries, apples and gooseberries as well as a book, a rummer, a silver jug and two gold goblets. For all their abundance, the individual motifs are presented side by side so as to form a clear arrangement. The still life painter Nicolaes Gillis, who probably came from Antwerp, is documented to have lived in Haarlem between 1612 and 1632, where he presumably died shortly after. The design of his works follows the strictly ordered compositions of his colleague in the city Floris van Dyck. This influence can clearly be observed in the present composition, which is dated 1601 and is thus his earliest known work. Nicolaes Gillis, Früchtestillleben Öl auf Holz. 45 x 56,5 cm. Signiert und datiert oben rechts: N Gillis fecit 1601. Provenienz Auktion Heberle, Köln 28.-29.10.1887 (Gemälde aus den Sammlungen Freiherr von Münchhausen, Franz Reichardt, J. P. Weyer u. a.), Lot 66. - Auktion Ant. Creutzer, Aachen 27.-28.4.1932 (Nachlass Baron von Holling und anderer Adels- und Privatbesitz), Lot 144. - Auktion Julius Stern, Düsseldorf 18.3.1933, Lot 16 (aus der Sammlung Heinrich Horten). - Galerie J. Kraus, Paris. - Dort 1977 erworben und seither in deutscher Privatsammlung. Literatur Ingvar Bergström: Dutch Still Life Painting in the Seventeenth Century, London 1956, S. 99-100, Abb. 89.
