An elegant damask drape is lifted to reveal a still-life with diverse musical instruments on a ledge: a trumpet, a violin, a guitar, together with books, musical notebooks, fruit and flowers. The displayed objects might well hide symbolic meaning: the silent instruments might allude do the fleeting experiences of senses and the composition might remind o the transience of life. Most likely first active in Evaristo Baschenis workshop, Bartolomeo Bettera became later independent and, after Bashenis death, replaced him as the leading painter of musical still lifes, developing an own personal style and leaning to a theatrical direction, in contrast to the more meditative forerunner. The present work presents many of the elements particular to Bettera´s work: the dramatically lit and broad composition is counterpointed and framed by architectonical details and perspectival elements, with the instruments sliding to the background. Typically for the works from the 1690s, the atmosphere appears less severe, more decorative, anticipating the 18th century taste. An interesting element for dating of the work is the inclusion of the flower still life by a different hand: fruits and flower are by Francesca Vincentina (1657-1700), active in Milan within the Volò workshop. The painting must therefore have been produced whilst Bettera was active in Milan, after 1688. Ein eleganter Damastvorhang wird geöffnet und gibt den Blick frei auf ein Stillleben mit verschiedenen Musikinstrumenten auf einem Sims: eine Trompete, eine Geige, eine Gitarre, zusammen mit Büchern, Notenheften, Obst und Blumen. Hinter den dargestellten Objekten könnte sich durchaus eine symbolische Bedeutung verbergen: die stummen Instrumente könnten auf die flüchtigen Erfahrungen der Sinne anspielen und die Komposition könnte an die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens erinnern. Bartolomeo Bettera, der wahrscheinlich zunächst in der Werkstatt von Evaristo Baschena tätig war, wurde später unabhängig und löste ihn nach dessen Tod als führenden Maler von Musikstillleben ab, wobei er einen eigenen Stil entwickelte und sich im Gegensatz zu seinem eher meditativen Vorgänger in eine theatralische Richtung bewegte. Das vorliegende Werk weist viele der für Betteras Werk typischen Elemente auf: Die dramatisch beleuchtete und breite Komposition wird durch architektonische Details und perspektivische Elemente kontrapunktiert und gerahmt, wobei die Instrumente in den Hintergrund treten. Typisch für die Werke aus den 1690er Jahren ist eine weniger strenge, eher dekorative Atmosphäre, die den Geschmack des 18. Jahrhunderts vorwegnimmt. Ein interessantes Element für die Datierung des Werks ist die Einbeziehung des Blumenstilllebens, das von einer anderen Hand stammt: Früchte und Blumen stammen von Francesca Vincentina (1657-1700), die in Mailand in der Werkstatt von Volò tätig war. Das Gemälde muss also in der Zeit entstanden sein, als Bettera in Mailand tätig war, also nach 1688.
