An early 16th century Mechelen carved figure of the Virgin and Child Walnut, carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. With extensive remains of presumably partially original older polychromy. Designed for a frontal viewpoint. The work depicts the Virgin in a red gown and golden cloak, carrying the clothed Christ Child in both hands before Her. He in turn holds a bunch of grapes as a symbol of the Eucharist in His hands. With insect damage and minor wear throughout. Mounted on a modern velvet-covered wooden plinth. Height 29.5 cm. Provenance Jan Roelofs art dealership, Amsterdam, 1990. - Subsequently in a Rhenish private collection. Mecheln Anfang 16. Jahrhundert, Madonna mit Kind Nussbaumholz, vollrund geschnitzt, auf der Rückseite nur kursorisch durchgestaltet. Große Reste einer älteren und in Teilen wohl originalen farbigen Fassung. Auf Vorderansicht gestaltete stehende Muttergottes in langem rotem Untergewand und goldenem Umhang. Das von ihr mit beiden Händen getragene bekleidete Jesuskind hält als eucharistisches Symbol eine Weintraubendolde in seinen Händen. Wurmlöcher. Geringfügige Bestoßungen. Auf modernen mit Samt bezogenen hölzernen Sockel montiert. Höhe 29,5 cm. Provenienz Kunsthandel Jan Roelofs, Amsterdam, 1990. - Seither in rheinischer Privatsammlung.
