The present work is not meant to be an exact representation of a specific place, but rather a capriccio in which the Amsterdam painter Jacobus Storck, the elder brother of the painter Abraham Storck, combined various architectural motifs to create a fanciful view. Nevertheless, one can probably assume that it is based on a view of the Rhine, especially since the artist undertook a sojourn along this river to study in around 1670. Fred G. Beim vorliegenden Gemälde handelt es sich nicht um die exakte Wiedergabe eines bestimmten Ortes, sondern um ein Capriccio, bei dem der Amsterdamer Maler Jacobus Storck, der ältere Bruder des ebenfalls als Maler tätigen Abraham Storck, verschiedene architektonische Motiven zu einer Phantasieansicht kombiniert hat. Nichtsdestotrotz darf man wohl annehmen, dass es sich um eine Ansicht des Rheins handelt, zumal der Künstler um 1670 eine Studienreise entlang des Rheins unternommen hat. Fred G. Meijer datiert unser Gemälde deswegen auf die Zeit nach 1670.
