A CARVED CIZHOU SGRAFFIATO VASE, NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY
China, 960-1127. The ovoid body supported on a spreading foot and surmounted by a tall waisted neck with everted rim. The body is carved through the finely crackled white slip to the beige-gray ground with four bands, the largest enclosing stylized peony blooms amid leafy scrolling vines, below a foliate and a geometric band and above a combed wave band, all beneath a translucent milky glaze.


Provenance:
New York trade.

Condition:
Old wear and some firing flaws, including a firing crack to the foot, dark spots, glaze recesses and flakes. Small chips, light scratches. The mouth with some chips, minor losses and an old repair.
