12th century AD. A two-edged iron sword of piled construction with broad tapering blade and shallow fuller to each face, curved quillons with flared ends, broad tang, faceted pommel of 'brazil nut' form; blade with brass-inlaid Lombardic-style lettering to one face 'ORVSEMDNVS' and three roundels with rosettes to the reverse. See Oakeshott, E. Records of the Medieval Sword, Woodbridge, 1991, item XI.3 1.3 kg, 96.5cm (38"). From an important English collection; acquired in the 1990s. Fine condition.
