3rd millennium BC. A well formed pecked and ground boat-shaped axe in a dark crystalline quartzite with asymmetric convex cutting edge tapering to a rounded butt, drilled to receive handle. See MacGregor, Arthur (editor), Antiquities From Europe and the Near East in the Collection of The Lord McAlpine of West Green, Oxford, 1987, no.40179 for generally similar example. 680 grams, 14.5cm (5 3/4"). From the London collection of Aleksey Vinokurov, formed from the 1920s-1951; collection number 21, found near Kemble, Gloucestershire, UK, in 1947; accompanied by a copy of the collection inventory dated 1951. Fine condition.
