A RARE, FINE AND LARGE FAMILLE ROSE 'HUNTING' AND 'SHIP' PUNCH BOWL Qianlong period, circa 1785 The exterior boldly and brightly enameled all round with two panels within scroll work and dragon heads containing fox-hunting scenes depicting 'The Chase' separated by dense grounds of iron-red and gilt Y-pattern, the interior very unusually depicting a full-masted East India Company merchant ship sailing in calm waters of a lightly delineated coastline and framed by an elaborate border of cell diaper pattern, scroll work and flower heads, a border of scrolling leaves and flowers around the tapering foot. 15 1/2in (39cm) diam Footnotes: 乾隆時期 約1785年 粉彩描金《狩獵》《船艦》潘趣大酒碗 Published: Cohen & Cohen, Take Two!, Antwerp, 2017, pp. 138-139, no. 56, prior to the discovery of the 'ghost' flag (p. 138 mistakenly numbered as p. 380) 出版: 倫敦Cohen & Cohen古董行,《Take Two!》,安特衛普,2017年,頁138-139,圖版編號56,著於發現《幽靈旗》之前(頁138誤寫為頁380) Fox-hunting scenes were popular decoration on punch bowls manufactured at China's 'porcelain city', Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province, for both the English and American markets in the 18th century. The scenes are undoubtedly derived from specific European prints in the first instance but have been recopied many times. Although the precise source cannot always be found, the general arrangement is very consistent, basically comprising scenes of 'the Meet', 'the Chase' and 'the Kill'. The source of the English hunting engravings may ultimately be Thomas Burford (1710-1774) after James Seymour (1702-1752). The ship depicted on the interior of this rare bowl is a very unusual maritime feature, as almost always a hunting bowl's interior scene also depicts a further aspect of the hunt. References: Cohen & Cohen 2007, nos. 32 and 33, pp. 54-57, with a discussion of images of fox hunting on two bowls, recording that some views are almost certainly derived from hunting prints by P.C. Canot after paintings by James Seymour; Litzenburg 2003, p. 211, no. 213, for a plate and sugar bowl with a very similar ship.
