As the destroyer, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent and unchanging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts.This magnificent stone figure has facial features and a high chignon typical of the Bayon style. The cylindrical piling up of his hair into a high chignon and regimented hair curls demonstrate the ecumenical nature of iconography in the Bayon period, the former associated with the supreme form of Vishnu, the latter with Shiva. The fullness of the forms give the face a softness which accentuates the eyes opened wide, and the fleshy and sensual lips. The anatomy shows a strong sense of observation. The overall silhouette is elegant and a reminder of the Pre Angkorian Art.The ornate carving of the diadem provide a delightful contrast with the smooth facial features. The inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips, moustache, wide open rimmed eyes and a rather broad, flat nose. The Trilochana of Shiva can be seen on his forehead - the Three-Eyed Lord. It is the eye of wisdom, free from “Maya”, the illusion, and duality of life.
