Description
Translation provided by Youdao
A pair of 19th century Buddhist disciples - Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. Depicted as freestanding sculptures each is sat respectfully with their legs to one side. Shariputra is leaning forward, listening attentively. Maudgalyayana holds his hands together in reverence. Contemporaries of Buddha, they were legendary for their piety and power. Here the sculptor has imparted a touching sense of youthful tenderness. The disciples have a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and firm brows. It is rare for a matched pair, such as these, to be found in such good condition. Provenance: Ex- private UK Collection. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece. Provenance: Private UK Collection Medium: Wood Dimensions: 50cm / 20" General Condition: Good condition. Consistent with age.
