Castilian school, second third of the 16th century. "The Circumcision". Oil on pine panel. Engatillada. It presents repainting and restorations. Measurements: 112 x 76 cm. In studied symmetry the characters are distributed in this composition of biblical theme. The small body of the Child Jesus occupies the physical and symbolic centre, and to him all looks, or gestures, converge. Under a red canopy, inscribed in the central niche of an open arched architecture, sits a priest who holds the child on his lap and before whom a figure (the mohel or minister) bows with a cutting instrument. He is sumptuously attired, wearing a miter and a robe brocaded with gold thread and jewels. Joseph holds a bowl of water, and Mary adopts a one-handed gesture to allude to the sacredness of the moment. The bluish, idealised landscapes behind the windows are influenced by the Flemish school. This is a painting from the Renaissance period and the Castilian school. The precision of the drawing is richly coloured, with the light lending silvery tones. This episode is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The Evangelist narrates this passage (2, 21), which will become a common iconographic theme in the Christian tradition, and which precedes the Presentation of the Child in the Temple. Art uses the information provided by the Apocryphal Gospels (mainly Pseudo-Matthew and the Arabic Gospel of the Infancy) to add details to the theme, which has been depicted in painting since the end of the 10th century, usually as part of the Cycle of Mary or of Christ.
