Distemper on cloth, framed in a black linen mounting. Tibet, 18/19th century or earlier
Depiction of Lama Tsongkhapa, the Gelug patriarch, with his characteristic headdress and on a richly embellished lotus throne with magic jewels. He is seated with crossed legs in padmasana and his left hand holding an alm’s bowl in dhyanamudra. The right hand holding the end of a lotus stem. Tsongkhapa is flanked by two lotus flowers, carrying the Buddhist symbols of a double vajra and a ghanta, framed by a large circular white halo with large lotus flowers. The head is framed with an additional halo. The central figure on the throne is depicted in an idealized landscape setting with soft hills and a fair sky with ornamental clouds. There are 15 surrounding figures, including lamas and other deities. On top a central depiction of Chakrasamvara.

Condition: Age-related condition, some losses in the material and wear, especially to the upper part, some cracks, the linen mounting with wear and slightly ripped.
