Ink and color on paper, each behind glass in lacquered wooden frame. China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)
Pair of fine and very detailed painted fan leaves, each with a depiction of a grasshopper among plants and rocks. Both papers with a longer inscription in Chinese, signed and dated with 3 artist seals. Another inscription on the passe-partout serving as an English translation of the Chinese inscription in the painting. First one reads: ‘This painting done in my leisure hours of the Wu Kung Leung flower and summer grasses steeped in dew may be compared with the fan paintings of the immortals. Painted by the Emperor Ch’ien Lung at the Ching Wo Palace in the Kiah Wu year (1774)’. The other one reads: ‘This painting of the Wu Kung Leung flower and summer grasses steeped in dew may be compared with the fan paintings of the immortals. Painted by the Emperor Ch’ien Lung at the Ching Wo Palace in the Kiah Wu year (1774)’. Both translations refer to labels on the verso of the frames with the same text.
