A carved wood figure of John the Baptist, presumably Bavaria, around 1500 Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out, the shoulders and back of the head only loosely worked. With partially overpainted older polychromy. This impressive large format work depicts the saint dressed in a lamb skin, pointing with his right hand towards the Lamb of God laying on a book held in his left hand over his hip. He stands in contrapposto with his right foot extended upon an earth mound plinth, leaning back slightly at the waist and facing right. The high quality of the carving is particularly evident in the detailed rendering of the figure`s hair and beard, as well as in the varied depiction of the lamb`s pelt and the artful drapery of the floor-length cloak, which he wears drawn over the shoulders and fastened across his body. With only minor wear, one minor loss to the left side of the plinth, a toe of the right foot reattached. Height 136 cm. Provenance German private collection. Exhibitions On loan to the Diocesan Museum in Eichstätt from 1990-2000, inv. no. L 1990 (labelled on the reverse). Wohl Bayern um 1500, Hl. Johannes der Täufer Holz, dreiviertelrund geschnitzt, auf der Rückseite abgeflacht und ausgehöhlt, im Bereich der Schulter und des Hinterkopfs nur kursorisch durchgestaltet. Ältere farbige Fassung, in Teilen übergangen. Die eindrucksvolle großformatige Skulptur zeigt den in ein Lammfell gekleideten Heiligen, der mit seiner rechten Hand auf das auf einem Buch liegende Lamm Gottes weist, das er auf seiner linken Hand seitlich über seiner Hüfte hält. Auf einer als Erdboden gestalteten Plinthe im Kontrapost mit vorgesetztem rechtem Fuß stehend, ist er mit leicht zurückgenommenem Oberkörper nach rechts gewandt. Die große schnitzerische Qualität der Skulptur zeigt sich zum einen in der detaillierten Gestaltung der Haar- und Barttracht und der differenzierten Wiedergabe der Struktur des Lammfells, zum anderen aber besonders in der kunstvollen Beobachtung des Faltenwurfs des Umhangs, der über der Schulter getragen und vor dem Körper verknotet bis auf die Füße des Heiligen hinabfällt. Nur geringfügige Bestoßungen, kleiner Verlust auf der linken Seite der Plinthe, ein Zeh des rechten Fußes wieder angefügt. Höhe 136 cm. Provenienz Deutsche Privatsammlung.
