AN IRONWOOD FIGURE OF GUANYIN, c. 1920sChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to Republic period (1912-1949). The serene deity elegantly carved standing on a base, wearing a long robe and cape, her right hand raised, the left holding a ruyi-scepter, her hair pulled up into a tall chignon tied with elegant, tasseled ornaments. The back of the base is carved with an ´imperial collection´ mark within a square. Condition: Good condition with some wear and extensive crackling, the two headdress tassels restored. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
