A LARGE ARCHAISTIC LAPIS LAZULI AXE WITH MYTHICAL BEASTS, QINGChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) or slightly later. Of flattened rectangular form broadening towards the cutting edge, decorated with archaistic motifs below a chilong in high relief clambering along the side. The top of the axe is carved with a crouching winged bixie. The stone of a deep, striking blue hue amid veins in various shades of gray beneath glimmering mica flecks. With a drilled hole for suspension to the upper part, below the Bixie. Condition: Good condition with surface wear and extensive encrustations. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above.
