A VERY LARGE AGATE HEAD OF GUANYIN, c. 1920sChina, Republic period (1912-1949). The semitranslucent beige stone with its distinct russet striations is carved to depict Guanyin with a serene and benevolent expression, eyes downcast beneath elegantly arching brows, flanked by elongated earlobes, the neatly incised hair piled into a topknot and secured by a high-peaked tiara centered by a flower bloom. Condition: Good condition, minor wear, the stone with natural fissures, cracks, and imperfections. Repair to base. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
