A SHANG STYLE BRONZE RITUAL WINE CUP, ZHI, MING DYNASTYChina, Ming dynasty (1368 – 1644). The pear-shaped body supported on a spreading foot and rising to an everted rim, finely decorated around the waisted neck with a narrow band of chilong above archaic scroll between two-line borders as well as two bosses, the splayed hollow foot encircled by two bow-string bands. With a later wood stand and a fitted silk box. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion. Fine, naturally grown patina with extensive malachite encrustation. Provenance: Norwegian private collection. Weight: 415 g (excl. stand) Dimensions: Height 14.3 cm (excl. stand)Zhi goblets served as drinking vessels. They were employed in important ritual performances aimed at paying homage to the ancestors.
