A TEAKWOOD SHRINE WITH A MONK, 19th CENTURYThailand, 19th century. The shrine carved with a splayed tiered base and a high altar with floral decoration, surmounted by a flame. Fitted with a figure of a monk, separately carved from sandalwood, depicted standing on a lotus base; wearing long robes, the benign face with a distinctive hairline, holding a rosary, a staff, a basket, and a fan. Condition: Overall good condition with minor losses, expected age cracks, wear, and remnants of paint. The monk´s fan and staff repaired. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
