11th-8th century BC. A bronze situla with rounded end and impressed cuneiform inscription; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham 1970-1993, which states: 'Ancient Iranian Bronze Situla 121 x 67 x 64 mm. This was a rounded bottom, roughly vertical sides and a plain lip. It is richly decorated. The bottom has a central small boss, and petals around. Then there is a guilloche and above that a band of rough U-shapes. There is then a plain stretch and above that the U-shaped and guilloche, but inverted, and then a final decorative band below the lip. On the plain stretch there is a three-line cuneiform inscription, in part worn off, but partly still legible: 'Property of Mr ?uzza(...)aye / son of Babu ..... / scribe ..... 'This comes from western Iran and dates to c. 1100-800 B,C, There are a few dents and some wear of the surface, but it is in fair condition.' 170 grams, 13cm (5"). Property of a Mayfair lady; formerly in an important London collection formed since 1965. Fine condition.
