LOT NOTES: Yan Wenliang (1893-1988), style name as Dongchen, born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, painter, educator, pioneer of the first generation of oil painting in China, one of the founders of modern Chinese painting, with Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian and Liu Haisu they've been called "four headmasters". Yan Wenliang, Zhu Shijie and Hu Zizhong founded Suzhou Art College (later merged and renamed Nanjing Art College) and established Suzhou Art Museum in 1927. Yan Wenliang went to Paris College of Fine Arts in 1928 to study. After returning to China in 1932, he successively served as the president of Suzhou Art College, the head of the Department of fine arts of Central University, the president of East China branch of Central Academy of fine arts, the vice president of Zhejiang Academy of fine arts and the professor of Central Academy of fine arts. Yan Wenliang's works focus on the spirit of realism and are good at combining the Eastern aesthetic and national spirit with the Western expression techniques, creating a unique artistic style, which is the representative of Chinese modern realism painting.
