Katsukawa Shunshō 勝川春章 (JAPAN, 1726-1792) ‘Ehon kabumakura’ (lit. ‘Illustrated book of numerous pillow poems’) Circa 1790s A shunga / erotic subject woodblock printed book With eight (8) double pages illustrations plus one showing European Published in 1790 Reference: A double page of this book is reproduced in GIAN CARLO CALZA, ‘Poème de l’oreiller et autres récits’, Paris : Phaidon, 2010, p. 210. Provenance: A large collection of 100+ Japanese woodblock prints, properties from a French collector. Note: Shunshō was a master at capturing the drama of the moment. He was the founder of the Katsukawa school, which devoted itself to depicting Edo's actors. Shunshō excelled at dramatic designs for pillar prints, which were made to be hung from house posts. He created linear figures that related in ingenious ways to this expressive and demanding shape.
