A ‘TORTOISESHELL IMITATION’ BOX, c. 1920sGoa, India, early 20th century. The rectangular box made out of wood, the exterior lined with Bakelite of orange color with dark patches in imitation of tortoise shell. Set with iron hinges, a lock, and a key. Condition: Good condition with some wear and tiny nicks along the edges, the base with a crack. The lock is not working properly. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
